What is Medical Marijuana for Dogs?

Marijuana, as you know, is a common term used to describe cannabis.

To better understand medical marijuana, I think it’s best to take a step back and look at some of the groundbreaking research into cannabis that took place over the last century.

The Discovery of Cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System

cbdThroughout most of the 20th century, cannabis was mainly thought of as a recreational drug that people used to “get high.”

However, recent research says otherwise.

It all started back in the 1960s when a group of scientists from Israel first discovered THC (or tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive chemical found in cannabis and other drugs derived from the cannabis plant.

This team of researchers was led by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, one of the world’s foremost cannabis researchers.

The discovery of the compound THC was one of the first key stepping stones to better understanding cannabis and how it interacts with the body.

In 1988, 2 researchers from St. Louis University Medical School, Missouri, found a receptor for the chemicals in cannabis in the brain of a rat.

They found that this receptor (now known as CB1) was actually more prevalent in the brain than any other neurotransmitter receptor.

In 1993, researchers discovered a second cannabis receptor (now known as CB2).

This receptor was found in higher concentrations in the body rather than the brain.

Based on these findings, an obvious question arose:

Why did mammals have a receptor in their brain made to interact with the chemicals of the cannabis plant?

Well, that question was answered when Dr. Mechoulam and a team of researchers discovered anandamide, a chemical very similar to THC that the mammalian body produces naturally.

Anandamide was found to attach directly to CB1 receptors in the brain.

A few years later, Mechoulam and his research group also discovered 2-AG (or 2-arachidonoylglycerol), a second chemical which attaches to both CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Today, the system of cannabis receptors and chemicals that bind to them is known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

This system occurs naturally in all mammals and has been shown to be involved in all kinds of different bodily processes, including memory, mood, appetite, metabolism, and much more.

Researchers soon learned that the chemicals in cannabis could activate the ECS and thereby evoke a lot of health-positive results.

How Does Medical Marijuana Work?

Medical marijuana works by activating the Endocannabinoid System using different plant-based cannabinoids.

Recent research into cannabis has identified at least 113 cannabinoids in the plant, all of which produce various different effects.

Some of the most studied cannabinoids in cannabis include THC, CBD, CBG (cannabigerol), and CBC (cannabichromene).

The benefits of these individual compounds vary.

However, some of the main benefits of medical marijuana include:

  • Anti-inflammation
  • Pain relief
  • Antianxiolytic effects
  • Anticonvulsant effects
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Relief from intraocular pressure (caused by glaucoma)
  • Antitumor properties

Is Medical Marijuana Safe for Dogs?

Safety is a huge topic in the world of pet health care.

As pet owners, we obviously never want to give our furry friends anything that isn’t 100% safe.

Because dogs have the same Endocannabinoid System as we do, they can reap the same benefits from cannabis as humans can.

Therefore, medical marijuana for dogs sounds good in theory.

cbd for dogs with digestive problemsUnfortunately, dogs and other pets are extremely sensitive to THC, the psychoactive chemical in cannabis.

And if you’ve ever seen a dog that’s accidentally consumed cannabis, you’ll know just how disturbing those effects can be.

In practice, using marijuana products with your dog can be tricky, mainly because of a lack of research into how these products affect dogs and a lack of products specifically made for animals.

The fact that cannabis laws often overlook pets means that there is no legal framework in place for people to use medical marijuana products with their dogs and get more information about how these products work.

Luckily, there’s a way around that.

And don’t worry:

What I’m about to mention is completely legal, safe, and has been tried by countless other pet owners just like you and me.

CBD: The #1 Cannabis Supplement for Dogs

If you’re interested in using cannabis products with your dog, I highly recommend using CBD.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is another compound of cannabis that has a plethora of health benefits (I’ll look at these in more details below).

Unlike THC, it’s completely non-psychoactive and 100% safe for dogs.

That’s because CBD pet products are actually made from hemp, not marijuana.

Without getting too technical, hemp is basically just a different species of the cannabis plant that contains very low concentrations of THC.

Unlike cannabis products, hemp supplements are legal all across the US and Canada as well as many other places around the world.

Plus, there’s a variety of pet CBD companies out there who have formulated great products that are specifically designed to be used with animals.

What are the Benefits of CBD for Dogs?

Below is a short list of just some of these benefits:

CBD is a Powerful Anti-Inflammatory

By activating the Endocannabinoid System, CBD has been shown to promote anti-inflammatory responses in the body. This makes it a promising treatment for a wide variety of inflammatory conditions, including arthritis, dysplasias, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, gastritis, and much more.

CBD Can Help Treat Anxiety

Anxiety and phobias are common in dogs. Separation anxiety is probably the most common, but some dogs also suffer from anxiety when traveling in the car, socializing with other dogs, or when a storm strikes. Thanks to its anti-anxiety effects, CBD can be a great way to help anxious and nervous dogs deal with their symptoms.

CBD Can Reduce Seizures

Watching your pup suffer from an epileptic seizure can be shocking. Unfortunately, epilepsy affects a lot of dogs and some breeds are more at-risk of dealing with epilepsy than others. Luckily, there’s a really sound body of research proving that CBD has anticonvulsant properties.

CBD Can Fight the Growth and Spread of Tumors

Cancer is one of the biggest causes of death among dogs, and getting a cancer diagnosis from your vet can be devastating. However, new research shows that CBD can help prevent the growth and spread of various tumors. In fact, many pet owners actively use CBD on their pets with cancer and see great results.
