Are you interested in giving your dog CBD oil?
If so, you’re probably wondering how to administer their oil and whether it can be mixed with food.
Well, it definitely can, but there are some things you need to keep in mind.
Keep reading to learn how to properly give your dog CBD oil.
Can You Mix CBD Oil With Your Dog’s Food?
Absolutely you can:
CBD oils are designed to be ingested, and mixing them with your pet’s food can be a great way to cover the flavor of the oil which some dogs might not like.
Alternatively, you can also add a few drops of CBD oil to a pet treat.
To make dosing even easier, you can even crack open CBD capsules and mix their contents with your pet’s food, too.
Any CBD product your dog eats will need to be digested before it starts taking effect.
I’ll cover this in more detail below:
How CBD Ingested Works in Your Pet’s Body
Dogs and cats have an endocannabinoid system just like humans.
This system is made up of 2 cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) and endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG.
Cannabinoid receptors can be found all around the body, including throughout the GI tract.
Now, CBD doesn’t actually bind to these receptors as anandamide or 2-AG do.
Instead, it activates other molecular pathways which end up stimulating the endocannabinoid system indirectly.
When you give your dog CBD oil, the oil is broken down and its compounds start to be absorbed in the stomach and intestines.
From there, it can activate receptors throughout the GI tract, as well as enter the bloodstream and be transported to other parts of the body.
Now, any oil taken by itself will obviously be easier for the body to break down than an oil taken together with food.
Oils taken on an empty stomach will also be broken down sooner than those taken after food.
In general, the effects of ingested CBD tend to have a slower release than CBD oil taken sublingually (under the tongue).
Again, this has to do with the fact that ingested CBD products need to be broken down by the digestive system.
Oils administered sublingually can be absorbed directly via the mucous membranes under the tongue and can start taking effect within 15-20 minutes.
So, if your pet needs fast relief from acute symptoms, keep this in mind and consider administering their oil “under the tongue” instead.
Unfortunately, hemp oils can be bitter, meaning some pets won’t like taking them this way.
Other Ways to Administer CBD to Your Dog
The CBD industry is growing and there’s an increasing number of products out there designed for dogs, cats, and other pets.
Right now, the main types of pet CBD products on the market include oils, capsules, treats, and topical products like sprays and balms.
In my experience of using CBD with my pets, I’ve found that each of these products has something unique to offer.
Oils are great because they can be administered sublingually and allow you to personalize your dogs dose depending on their needs.
Oils are also available in varying concentrations.
HolistaPet’s CBD tinctures, for example, are available in 150mg, 300mg, and 600mg concentrations, giving you some flexibility based on your pet’s condition and needs.
Another great brand called HempMyPet has tinctures containing up to 1000mg of CBD, which is great for dogs with serious illnesses who need large doses of CBD.
Capsules, on the other hand, are super easy to use.
Each capsule contains a set dose of CBD and can easily be given to your pet either on its own, hidden in a treat, or broken up and mixed with food (as I mentioned earlier).
Just like with their oils, Holistapet also has 3 concentrations of CBD pet capsules.
CBD treats are great for dogs that don’t like taking CBD in the form of oil or capsules.
Some of my favorite treats include HempMyPet’s Pumpkin Harvest Organic Dog Biscuits.
These handmade treats are available in either 5mg or 2mg concentrations and are made with organic CBD hemp extract made in Colorado, USA.
For smaller breeds, HempMyPet also has these handmade Peanut Butter Banana Christmas Biscuits which contain 2mg of CBD extract per treat.
For a bit more variety, consider other CBD infused products.
Made with organic peanut butter and 100% pure CBD, this is a fun, healthy way to give your dog CBD and can be particularly effective at treating intestinal issues, pain and inflammation, anxiety, and much more.
Alternatively, HempMyPet also has this CBD-infused coconut oil.
Made with 100% organic, unrefined coconut oil and organic hemp extract grown in Colorado, this is another great-tasting alternative to try with your pet.
Remember that coconut oil can also be used topically on your pup’s coat, as well as on rashes, cuts, and more. My full coconut guide is found here.
Tips for Giving Your Dog CBD Oil
If you’re planning to use CBD oil with your dog, here are a few tips to ensure you get the best results:
- Always use the right dose. Check out my CBD dosing page for detailed information on how to calculate the best dose based on your pet’s needs.
- Use the right concentration of CBD. There are various strengths of CBD oil out there, ranging from 150mg to 1000mg. Make sure to research the differences between these concentrations and find the right strength for your pet.
- If your dog needs fast relief from acute symptoms, try administering their oil sublingually.
- On the other hand, if your dog suffers from chronic symptoms and needs long-lasting relief, mix their oil with a small amount of food for a slow, steady release of CBD throughout the day.
How to Find The Best CBD Oils for Your Dog
I first started using CBD with my pets after my Golden Retriever, Rosie, was diagnosed with cancer.
After I saw the amazing effects CBD had on her health, I started this website where I help pet owners like you stay informed about the benefits of CBD and find the best products for their furry friends.
Right now, I recommend a few main brands of CBD oils for pets.
If you’re looking for high-quality oils made with the best ingredients, I highly recommend HempMyPet.
This company makes a variety of different CBD products made with organically grown hemp extract, including a 1000mg tincture.
HolistaPet, on the other hand, is another great company with a variety of CBD oils, as well as capsules and treats. I really recommend this brand for its accessible prices and its growing database of customer reviews.
Finally, I also really like Honest Paws for its large selection of CBD products, including their soft chews and infused products.
If you’re interested in trying CBD with your pets, I recommend all of these brands. You can view my updated rankings here.
