Your Rottweiler is a loyal, loving companion.
She might look big, tough, and be a little stubborn, but I’m sure she shows unconditional love to anyone she warms up to.
The truth is, Rottweilers are pretty healthy and athletic dogs. But I’m sure you’re aware that they’re prone to developing some problems.
So I’m guessing your pup might have an issue, and you’ve heard about this stuff called CBD.
Well, the good news is that CBD is a natural remedy that can help your Rottie deal with many different ailments.
Let’s talk about CBD and Rottweilers specifically, and then I’ll share my dog’s success and highlight some brands we saw good results with.
A Bit About Your Rottie
The Rottweiler is a descendant of the Molussus, an ancient dog breed similar to the Mastiff.
Brought to modern-day Germany by the Romans, the Rottweiler is a hard-worker traditionally used to herd cattle.
And while their size and appearance might make them intimidating to some, Rottweilers love to cuddle and make for loyal, friendly companions and excellent family dogs.
They are known to be hard-headed and independent, but are generally calm dogs given adequate training and plenty of exercises.
If you own a Rottie, you’ll know just how much these dogs love their outdoor play time, while never missing an opportunity to cuddle up on the couch or bed afterwards.
Common Rottweiler Health Problems
Rottweilers are typically healthy dogs given they meet their exercise needs, and they're fed a healthy, balanced diet.
However, like all other dog breeds, they can be prone to some health problems, such as dysplasias and bloat.
They are also prone to some cancers and are known for chewing and digging, especially when they’re bored.
Here's a bit more:
- Aortic Stenosis: This condition is caused by a partial obstruction of blood flow as it leaves the left ventricle of the heart. This forces the heart to work harder in order to pump the adequate amount of blood around the body.
- Dysplasias: Due to their size, Rottweilers are naturally more prone to dysplasias, especially of the hips and elbows. These dysplasias are caused by genetic malformations of the bones in the affected joint, causing bones to rub against each other. This can result in lameness and pain, and will usually lead to arthritis, which causes further degeneration of the joint.
- Cancers: All dogs can develop cancers and Rottweilers are no different. Research shows that cancer is one of the leading causes of death in this breed. The most common cancers affecting Rottweilers are lymphoma, osteosarcoma, as well as liver and spleen tumors.
- Cruciate Ligament Rupture: The cruciate ligaments run across the back of the kneecap, holding together the femur, tibia, and fibula. These ligaments can stretch, rupture, or snap completely, often causing lameness in the leg. Luckily, the ligaments can be fixed with surgery.
- Eye Problems: Eye problems are a common health problem for many dogs, and Rottweilers seem to experience them frequently. The most common eye diseases affecting these dogs include cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (or PRA).
- Osteochondritis Dessicans: This condition affects all canines, but is much more prevalent in big-boned breeds like the Rottweiler. The condition usually affects pups of about 4-6 months and occurs when the bones grow abnormally (typically stretching or simply growing too fast without aligning properly). This can result in broken bones and malformed joints.
How Can CBD Help My Rottweiler?
I talk a lot about CBD, or cannabidiol, on my site.
I discovered this compound after my Golden Retriever, Rosie, got sick.
Rosie was born with hip dysplasia, which eventually caused her to develop arthritis.
The degeneration of her bones left her in a lot of pain, which in turn left her feeling less active, often avoiding walks and other forms of exercise.
Then, only a few years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer.
As soon as I got the diagnosis from my vet, I set out to find ways to help Rosie cope with her condition as well as improve her quality of life in her remaining time with us.
That’s when I learned about CBD.
Through countless hours of research, I learned that this little compound taken from cannabis and hemp plants can have a plethora of health benefits for humans and pets.
CBD, for example, can help ease pain, fight inflammation, calm anxiety and fear, and possibly even hinder the growth and spread of tumors.
For more info on the medicinal value of this compound, be sure to check out this list of CBD benefits.
For now, here are some ways CBD can help your dog.
CBD Oil for Rottweilers With Osteosarcoma and Cancer
Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that tends to affect large, big-boned dog breeds like Rottweilers, Great Danes, and others.
It is the most common type of bone cancer affecting canines.
Unfortunately, osteosarcoma is extremely aggressive and tends to metastasize rapidly.
While there are some treatment options available, the long-term prognosis for dogs with osteosarcoma is poor.
The symptoms of this cancer can include joint pain, swelling, and lameness, all of which are common symptoms of other conditions, including dysplasias and arthritis for example.
Some dogs may also become anorexic as a result of this cancer or become tired and lethargic.
Others may suffer from a large growth and severe inflammation around the areas of the tumor.
Most of the time, however, the symptoms of osteosarcoma are subtle, making it a difficult cancer to diagnose.
If your dog suffers from osteosarcoma, I highly recommend using CBD for 2 main reasons:
The #1 reasons: CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, sometimes labeled one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories known to date.
CBD can ease the inflammation caused by a wide variety of conditions, including everything from arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease to Parkinson’s.
That’s because CBD activates the endocannabinoid system, a system which all mammals (including you and your dog) have.
This system plays a key role in a variety of bodily processes, including pain, memory, metabolism, mood and, most importantly, inflammation.
By activating this system, CBD can possibly help fight inflammation around your dog’s tumor.
In doing so, CBD can help your dog experience less pain due to their condition.
For a more detailed overview of the endocannabinoid system and its role in managing inflammation, I recommend reading my previous post on CBD for managing inflammation and joint pain.

Another way CBD can greatly help your Rottweiler with osteosarcoma is this:
There's a link between CBD and powerful anti-cancer properties.
A large body of recent research suggests that CBD and other compounds found in cannabis/hemp plants can help fight the growth and spread of tumors.
Studies show that it does so by a process known as angiogenesis.
In order to continue developing and growing, tumors develop new blood vessels via angiogenesis.
This process helps direct blood to the tumor, ultimately helping it stay alive and spread.
Studies have shown that CBD can directly inhibit a tumor’s ability to produce these new blood vessels, which ultimately causes it to die.
Studies have also shown that CBD can help kill off certain kinds of cancer cells.
In 2007, for example, Dr. Sean McAllister, a scientist at the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, conducted research which showed CBD could actually help destroy breast cancer cells.
McAllister's studies showed that CBD helped lower the expression of a specific breast cancer gene.
I’ve looked at the anti-cancer properties of CBD before in more detail.

I personally used CBD with Rosie, and it had extremely positive effects on her condition.
As her cancer developed, Rosie became increasingly lethargic and tired.
She was always an extremely energetic dog and loved going for long walks, playing in the park, or enjoying a dip in the water.
But as her arthritis developed and her cancer progressed, she’d often just lounge around the house, only getting up off her bed to be let outside to do her business.
She’d avoid going on walks, and pretty much just seemed increasingly “under the weather” as the days went on.
That all changed when we started her on CBD, though.
Within the first few days of treatment, Rosie seemed in notably less pain and started regaining her high spirits and energy around the house.
As we continued her treatment, her condition only improved, and soon she was joining us on walks and back on track to being the Rosie we knew.
Best of all, her CBD treatment also helped Rosie outlive the prognosis given to us by my vet.
Most importantly, during her final months with us, Rosie returned to being the lively, happy dog we loved.
Hence, if your Rottweiler is dealing with osteosarcoma (or any other kind of cancer for that matter), give CBD a try.
We used King Kalm CBD products by King Kanine and couldn’t be happier with the quality of their products.
CBD Oil for Dogs With Hip - Elbow Dysplasias
As I mentioned earlier, Rottweilers and other large dog breeds are known to deal with dysplasias of the hip and elbows.
These dysplasias are caused by malformations in the hip or elbow joint, causing the bones in the affected joints to rub against each other unnaturally.
This friction causes the joints to become inflamed and swollen.
Over time, the joints wear out much more than they would regularly, usually giving way to other joint problems (most commonly arthritis).
This leads to all kinds of problems.
The most common and obvious is inflammation of the joints, which leaves your pet dealing with constant pain.
But there are many other effects of hip dysplasia and arthritis that further impede on your dog’s life.
Rosie, for example, quickly put on weight simply because she avoided going on walks, exercising, or doing anything that put extra stress on her hip.
And as I’m sure you know, weight gain is a big problem for dogs, and actually ends up putting further unnecessary pressure on their joints.
Luckily, CBD really helped our dog's joint pain, and it can help your pup as well.
CBD is a renowned painkiller. It works like any other pain medication but without the nasty side effects.
By helping our dog Rosie deal with her inflammation and pain, she became more active and energetic, which also helped keep her in better shape.
So, if you have a Rottweiler with a dysplasia and/or arthritis, I highly recommend trying CBD products.
Are Other Big Dogs Finding CBD is Worth Using?
The short answer:
HoneyBear, for example, is a 10-year-old Rottie using CBD for chronic pain and Osteosarcoma.
Her owners used CBD to help with her post amputation surgery and believe it has helped her a lot in her recovery.
Lucky, was also diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, and he uses CBD to help him manage the pain and symptoms from cancer treatment.
Lucky actually lost the use of his rear legs, and his owners were thinking about putting him down. But they decided to try CBD and Lucky has showed an amazing recovery. He's been able to move around more, and is living past his expected time.
