German Shepherds: Loyal, Loving, and Extremely Smart
The German Shepherd is a very popular dog breed.
Known for being extremely intelligent, loyal, and calm, you’ll find German Shepherds lounging about in regular households as well as at work in professional settings and even starring in movies and TV shows.
In fact, one of the most important canine movie stars of all time was Rin Tin Tin, a male German Shepherd rescued from a WWI battlefield by an American soldier and went on to star in countless Hollywood films.
While German Shepherds can be a little intimidating (especially to strangers), they’re renowned for showing plenty of affection to those they trust.
Originally bred in Germany to be used as work dogs in the police force and military, German Shepherds are very intelligent and respond extremely well to training.
However, they also require plenty of exercise, and generally don’t respond well to a life as a “couch potato.”
When socialized properly, German Shepherds make for great family dogs, getting along well with children as well as other dogs and animals.
Common Conditions in German Shepherds
German Shepherds are considered a medium-to-large size breed and live for roughly 10-14 years.
Health wise, this is a list of issues they deal with regularly:
- Hip dysplasia (displacement in the hip)
- Elbow dysplasia (displacement in the elbows)
- Degenerative myelopathy (degeneration of the spinal cord, inhibiting its ability to communicate with the brain)
- Osteoarthritis (inflammation in the joints)
- Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)
- Bloat (expanding stomach filled with air, gas, fluid, and sometimes food)
- Spondylosis Deformans (abnormal, painful bony growths in the spine)
- Lupus (immune dysfunction affecting nails, hair, skin, and other parts of the body)
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Pancreatic insufficiency (non-functioning pancreas, affecting nutrient absorption from food)
- Perianal Fistula (openings around the anus causing diarrhea, bloody stool, pain, and infection)
- Megaesophagus (limp esophagus making it hard to pass food)
- Separation anxiety
- Constant barking
- Chewing, biting, and digging
How Can CBD Help My German Shepherd?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a powerful compound taken from cannabis and hemp plants.
Studies are showing that this can be super helpful for so many dogs, and that’s why more and more pet owners are using it.
CBD pet products like those I review on my site can help your German Shepherd with a whole list of things, including:
- Pain and inflammation (caused by inflammation, arthritis, or hip dysplasia)
- Anxiety and stress
- Immune disorders (like Lupus or IBD)
- Seizures (caused by Epilepsy)
- Eating disorders (such as a reduced appetite)
- Nausea and vomiting
Apart from using CBD as a medicine to treat these (and more) conditions, you can also use CBD as a regular dietary supplement.
CBD Dosage for German Shepherds
Dosing CBD is simple.
Most CBD products come with specific dosage information based on the size (in lbs) of your dog.
Nonetheless, here are some basic dosage guidelines for CBD products for this type of breed:
CBD Oil: 3-4 drops, 3-4 times daily.
CBD Capsules: 1 capsules up to 2 times per day (with food).
CBD Treats: Up to 3 treats 2 times per day.
Seeing as German Shepherds weight between 40-90 lbs, they’ll usually require larger doses of CBD than some other breeds.
Remember, these are rough guidelines and may vary depending on your dog, his/her individual condition, and the product you’re using.
Always follow the dosage instructions outlined on the product you’re using.
See Other Dogs Who are Pain Free from CBD
I tend ramble on about how my dogs have seen great results with CBD.
The truth is there are so many dogs that are seeing good results. Let’s highlight a few here:
First we have Sammie.
Like many other dogs, Sammie has really bad joint pain.
In fact, her hip dysplasia was so bad that her owners were debating on putting her down. She was that uncomfortable.
But after dropping the pain meds that were giving her bad side effects, Sammie started on CBD and everything changed.
Her owners report that her quality of life has greatly improved!
Next we have Krieger.
Krieger’s owners were told his days were numbered due to tumors and bad hips.
Like any pet owner, Krieger’s parents just wanted him to feel the best he could as he was getting older.
Because of CBD, he’s still alive after years of hearing the bad news, and his energy levels are way up. Plus, he’s no longer suffering from his skin allergies!
Lastly we have the big Brady.
Brady was undergoing some physical therapy when his owner decided to try CBD with him.
After just two weeks, he began showing signs that the CBD was working extremely well. In this short amount of time he seemed much happier with a spring in his step again.
Picking the Right CBD Products for German Shepherds
Whether your German Shepherd suffers from one of the conditions I listed above or could simply benefit from a healthy, natural dietary supplement, I suggest you give CBD a try.
I discovered CBD after our Golden Retriever got sick.
As soon as we got the diagnosis (cancer and hip dysplasia), I began hunting for ways to help my dog Rosie cope.
Long story short, CBD was recommended to me, and I began to research it.
After spending countless days researching CBD and hassling my vet, I finally decided to give it a shot.
Over the years I’ve tried several brands on my own dogs, and other dogs in my family. We found products from Honest Paws to be great.
For a large breed like yours, you will want to make sure you get a quality CBD product, and enough of it.
Normally German Shepherds use CBD to treat pain, and this requires a larger dose than say a Toy Poodle suffering from anxiety.
So I think a really good product for you is Honest Paws’ Purity Level 3.
I’ve used this on my dogs and saw great results. The Purity Level 3 Oil is ideal for dogs over 50 pounds.
My sister in law has also seen good results with this on her Dobermann who suffers from anxiety.
If you decide to try it on your Shepherd, I really hope you see good results too.
