What to Look for When Buying CBD Products for Your Dog?
Before I look at CBD peanut in more detail, let’s first take a look at how to pick high-quality CBD products for your pet in the first place:
As you know, there’s a wide variety of CBD pet products out there.
So, how do you choose one over another?
Well, there’s a couple of things to look out for:
First of all, you’ll only want to buy products that are THC-free or contain only trace amounts of it.
THC is the main psychoactive component of marijuana.
And while THC has been shown to have health benefits, it remains illegal in many parts of the world and we still don’t know if it is safe to use on animals. I have more details on THC for dogs here.
Secondly, you’ll obviously want to ensure the CBD pet products you’re buying are made with quality ingredients and by a reputable manufacturer.
Unfortunately, the CBD industry is still very young and lacks some of the strict quality controls we’re used to from other, more established industries.
Thirdly, you obviously need to consider your pet’s condition and think about the best way to administer CBD to him.
If, for example, your dog suffers from localized pain and inflammation from arthritis in one of their joints, they might benefit from a topical CBD product like this CBD balm by King Kanine. Topical CBD products are great for relieving these kinds of localized symptoms.
If your dog suffers from gastrointestinal inflammation and pain, on the other hand, they might be better off with CBD treats which offer a slow release of CBD via the digestive tract.
Finally, you’ll also have to take into consideration how fussy your pet is about taking medications and supplements.
Unfortunately, some CBD products (especially oils and tinctures) can have a bitter flavor that certain dogs won’t tolerate.
Now, I’m lucky enough to have pets who never have any problems taking their meds.
I was even able to administer CBD under my dog’s tongue without much difficulty.
But I’m aware that that’s not the case for everyone.
If your dog is picky about taking their meds, you’ll want to look for CBD-infused products like those I’m about to mention in this article.
These products contain all the beneficial properties of hemp but hide its flavor, making for a delicious, simple way to give your pet CBD.
The boring alternative would be to simply add CBD oil to your dogs food.
CBD-Infused Peanut Butter: A Simple, Delicious Way to Give CBD to Your Pet
There’s a wide variety of different CBD treats out there with all kinds of different flavors, strengths, etc.
I’ve tried many of these products, and some of my favorites I’ve reviewed on my website here.
But recently I stumbled on an awesome alternative to the regular CBD dog treats out there with this CBD Peanut Butter by Honest Paws.
As I’m sure you know, peanut butter drives dogs nuts:
Chances are you’ve noticed your furry friend race to the kitchen at even the slightest sound of that lid popping off the peanut butter jar.
And, just like peanut butter (in moderation, of course) can be good for us humans, it can actually be a very nutritional and healthy treat for dogs, too.
The Health Benefits of Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is naturally rich in protein and healthy fats.
In fact, roughly 50% of the fat in peanut butter is oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid with a bunch of health benefits.
Oleic acid, for example, has been shown to help reduce blood pressure, boost insulin sensitivity, and can even reverse some of the symptoms of type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Oleic acid is also one of the main ingredients used to make myelin, a sort of insulated covering on the end of nerve fibers that helps them communicate efficiently.
It can also help improve heart health and protect against heart failure.
Besides being rich in oleic acid, peanut butter is also rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins E, B3, B6, folate, magnesium, manganese, and more.
Combine that with the health benefits of CBD and you’ve got yourself a really comprehensive treat that your pets will love.
The Health Benefits of CBD
CBD works by activating your dog’s endocannabinoid system, a signaling system that plays a key role in promoting homeostasis in your pet’s body, allowing it to function at its best.
Studies show that the endocannabinoid system is responsible for mediating immune responses like inflammation, as well as being involved in managing pain signaling, metabolism and appetite, mood and emotion, and much more.
By activating your pet’s endocannabinoid system, treats like CBD Peanut Butter can help address issues like:
- Chronic pain
- Insomnia and sleep issues
- Fatigue and decreased activity (especially in older dogs)
- Cognitive decline
- Gastrointestinal issues
… and much more.
If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out my CBD benefits page for a more detailed rundown of the health benefits of CBD for pets.
Because the endocannabinoid system is involved in so many different aspects of the body’s function, CBD supplements can offer a really well-rounded way to boost your pet’s health.
Why Choose CBD-Infused Treats Over Oils, Capsules, and Other Forms of CBD?
As I mentioned earlier, there’s no shortage of pet CBD products out there.
So, what’s so special about CBD-infused treats like peanut butter?
Well, any CBD product that your pet swallows has to pass through their digestive tract before it can take effect.
This goes for CBD capsules and oils as well, although oils can be administered sublingually where some of the CBD can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream via the mucous membranes under the tongue.
In fact, you can break open a CBD capsule and administer its contents this way, too.
Unfortunately, some dogs don’t like the taste of CBD oil and will try to swallow it as soon as you give it to them.
Sublingual administration offers a faster onset time, making it an attractive way to administer CBD to pets who need fast relief from a particular symptom or condition (such as a seizure, for example).
Oral administration, on the other hand, offers a long-lasting, slow release of CBD into the body.
I find this especially useful in situations where your pet needs long-lasting relief, like when treating chronic pain and inflammation.
I also find infused treats like peanut butter especially effective at relieving gastrointestinal symptoms like pain and inflammation from gastritis or colitis.
The endocannabinoid system is present in all parts of your pet’s body, including their GI tract.
Cannabinoid receptors, for example, can be found all throughout the digestive system.
Now, CBD can’t actually bind to these receptors.
However, as it’s broken down and absorbed through the GI tract, CBD can activate over 60 different molecular pathways that end up activating the endocannabinoid system indirectly.
How Much CBD Peanut Butter Can Your Dog Eat?
1 tbsp of Honest Paw’s peanut butter contains 5mg of CBD.
According to the packaging instructions, your dog can eat between ½ – 1 tbsp per day, depending on their size.
Now, remember that peanut butter is a treat and, despite its health benefits, should be eaten in moderation.
