Have you got a pup who’s a little aggressive, anxious, or acting out?

If so, you’re probably wondering whether they can benefit from CBD like older dogs.

Well, they can, but there are a couple of things you should keep in mind before trying CBD with your puppy.

CBD is Safe for Young and Old Dogs

I want to make this clear from the get-go:

CBD is a very safe supplement that very rarely produces side effects in dogs.

And even when it does, the side effects of CBD are very mild, such as slight drowsiness or slight diarrhea (although the latter is very rare).

And just like CBD supplements are safe and even beneficial for children, they are also safe and potentially beneficial for puppies.

CBD can help dogs with a wide variety of conditions and symptoms, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Pain
  • Convulsions and epilepsy
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Appetite loss
  • Activity loss
  • Cognitive decline
  • Cancer

CBD delivers these benefits by stimulating the endocannabinoid system.

You can read more about the wide range of CBD benefits here.

When NOT to Give CBD to Your Puppy:

Now, just because CBD can help with these conditions, that doesn’t mean you should give it to your pup at the first site of a behavioral problem or other symptom.

I always recommend you speak to your vet before deciding to start your dog on CBD.

I also only recommend CBD for serious conditions and symptoms that can’t be treated with training or lifestyle changes, or a new diet.

If your puppy is acting aggressive towards other pets or animals, for example, I’d take these issues up with your vet first.

Most puppies grow out of bad behavior (such as biting and chewing), especially if you take the time to teach them not to act in this way.

The same goes for anxiety:

It’s not uncommon for puppies to act out when they’re left alone, but this kind of behavior can often be unlearned with early detection and the right kind of training.

If your dog suffers from gastrointestinal issues or appetite problems, I also recommend talking to your vet about lifestyles and dietary changes before going out and trying CBD.

Now, you might be surprised by me saying this.

After all, I’m pretty fond of CBD as both a supplement and a medicine.

However, I don’t think pet owners should think of it as a solution for everything.

Instead, like with any other supplement or medicine, you should always consider your pet’s condition and needs, and consult your vet before making the decision to start your dog on CBD.

When To Give Your Dog CBD

I generally recommend looking to CBD for relief from chronic symptoms and conditions that can’t be treated with some kind of behavioral or lifestyle change.

If, for example, your dog’s separation anxiety continues to be a problem and your vet is suggesting putting them on some kind of prescription anxiolytic, that’s when I’d start looking into CBD.

The same goes for behavioral problems like aggression.

If these problems persist and can’t be dealt with using the right training or behavioral therapy, it might be time to bring up CBD.

The same goes for pain, inflammation, and other conditions that your vet might want to treat with prescription meds over a long period of time.

Because CBD usually doesn’t produce side effects and is completely natural and safe, it can be a great alternative to some prescription meds, especially if your dog needs relief from something chronic.

Always Do Your Research and Find the Right CBD Product for Your Pet

I can’t stress this enough:
