CBD is a wonderful supplement for pets.

Hence, if you’re planning a trip with your furry friend, I’m sure you’ll want to take their CBD with you.

Unfortunately, traveling with CBD isn’t as simple as it seems.

Read on to find out why.

Flying With CBD Within the US

The US Transport Security Administration makes it very clear that it is illegal to fly with CBD:

Possession of marijuana and cannabis-infused products, such as Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, is illegal under federal law. TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law, including possession of marijuana and cannabis-infused products.

Now, the TSA also makes it clear that its officers aren’t actively searching for CBD or drugs at airports.

Instead, they are focused on detecting security threats.

Nonetheless, if a TSA officer finds CBD or another cannabis-derived substance on a passenger, they are legally obligated to report that offence to law enforcement officers.

Also, keep in mind that the TSA operates under federal law.

That means that, even in states where cannabis has been fully legalized, it is illegal to bring CBD onto an airplane.

Note:

The TSA states that its officers have the final call in what is allowed past an airport security checkpoint. Some officers may turn a blind eye to travelers with CBD, but I wouldn’t risk it.

Flying With CBD in Canada

Canada legalized cannabis in October 2018 under the Cannabis Act.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has updated its policies, and it is now possible to fly with legal amounts of cannabis throughout Canada.

This includes CBD oil.

When taken in carry-on baggage, CBD oil cannot exceed 100ml and needs to be placed in a 1-liter clear, closed, re-sealable plastic bag along with any other liquids and aerosols.

Traveling internationally with cannabis, however, remains illegal in Canada.

Flying With CBD in Other Parts of the World

So, we’ve covered the legality of flying with CBD in the US and Canada.

But what about the rest of the world?

Unfortunately, this is a difficult question to answer because different countries have different policies regarding cannabis and cannabis derivatives.

In the Netherlands, for example, flying with CBD is no problem as it is not listed on the Opiumwet (Opium Act).

Dutch Customs just recommend flying with a printout from your doctor or pharmacy detailing all the medications you take in order to make things easier when entering the country.

If you’re traveling within The Netherlands with your dog, you may want to get some kind of document from your vet stating that your pet requires CBD and why.

Switzerland has similar laws.

Any hemp product with less than 1% THC can be brought into the country without any problem.

In Germany, the same goes for hemp products containing less than 0.2% THC.

Always Know The Local Law

Unfortunately, the laws regarding CBD and other cannabis derivatives vary across the world, and I can’t outline the laws of every country in this article.

If you’re traveling with your pet and want to take their CBD supplements with you, make sure to have a clear understanding of the local laws both in your departure and arrival location.

Alternatives to Traveling With CBD

Sometimes you simply won’t be able to take your pet’s CBD products with you on a trip.

If that’s the case, consider some of the following alternatives:

  • Buy CBD at your destination.
  • Mail your pet’s CBD to your destination ahead of time. This is a great option if traveling in Europe or the US.

Find the Best CBD Products for Your Pet

If you need to buy CBD for your pet, it’s important you do your due diligence and only get them the best products on the market.

Unfortunately, the CBD industry is still in its infancy and missing a lot of the regulations we’re used to from other, more established industries.
